US won’t provide explanations for sanctioning Georgian judges – opposition politician

Zurab Girchi Japaridze on Tuesday said the United States would never present a “20-page” explanation why it had sanctioned four Georgian judges for alleged corruption, in response to the criticism of the ruling Georgian Dream party and its lawmakers over the move.

“Any country has the right not to allow the citizens of any other country into its territory”, Japaridze said.

The US Department of State on Wednesday imposed sanctions on three acting and one former Georgian judge, who are described as the leaders of the country’s “judiciary clan” by domestic NGOs.

The Georgian Dream authorities called the decision “unfair” and said “no evidence” had been presented by the US to back the move.

They claimed to discuss the issue with the “strategic partner”, and expressed hope the decision would be “reviewed”.
