Voting underway in Georgia’s presidential election

The voting procedure for Georgia’s presidential election is currently ongoing and will conclude at 2:00 PM.

For the first time, the country’s sixth president will be elected indirectly by the Electoral College. The sole candidate for the presidency is Mikheil Kavelashvili, nominated by the ruling party, Georgian Dream.

According to the law, a quorum of at least 151 members of the 300-member Electoral College is required for the election to proceed. To secure the presidency, a candidate must receive at least 200 votes.

The Electoral College comprises 300 members: 150 members of Parliament, 21 deputies from the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, 20 deputies from the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, and 109 representatives from local self-government bodies.

Out of the 109 local government representatives, Georgian Dream was initially allocated 54 seats, while eight opposition parties were assigned 55. However, as the opposition failed to appoint members, all 55 seats were filled by the ruling party. Consequently, Georgian Dream now holds 211 seats in the Electoral College: 89 from Parliament, 13 from Adjara’s Supreme Council, and 109 from local councils.

This election marks a significant shift in Georgia’s political process, with the ruling party maintaining substantial control over the selection process.
