Yuknevičienė: “Georgian Dream did not win elections, international investigation is needed”

European Parliament member Rasa Yuknevičienė stated that the October 26 elections in Georgia were not won by the ruling Georgian Dream party and called for an independent international investigation to examine the integrity of the election process. Yuknevičienė’s remarks reflect the stance of the European People’s Party, which, according to her, does not recognize the legitimacy of the recent elections in Georgia.

She emphasized the need for future elections in Georgia to be monitored by international democratic institutions rather than by the Georgian Dream. Yuknevičienė warned that the situation could impact Georgia-EU relations, as the process toward EU candidacy is currently on hold. She noted that EU membership is incompatible with oligarchic systems, indirectly referencing Georgian Dream’s connections to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and chair of the ruling party.

’’Of course, the Georgian people deserve a European future, but on the other hand, it is very clear to us that EU membership is incompatible with the oligarchic system. There is a lot to say, and I think it will be something that different political parties have to say during the debate. We have already mentioned sanctions several times, especially in the context of Bidzina Ivanishvili, who deserved to be sanctioned,” she stressed, expressing the hope that the US also imposes sanctions.
