Mamuka Mdinaradze, the ruling Georgian Dream party MP, on Wednesday dismissed claims his party had plans to back an anti-LGBT propaganda bill announced by the opposition lawmaker Pridon Injia earlier this week. 

In his comments Mdinaradze claimed such a law would contradict the domestic legislation and would benefit the “radical opposition” to discredit the authorities. The lawmaker also said the current authorities were protecting the interests of “any groups” in the country. 

The opposition and civil society representatives claim the ruling party had plans to back the bill to prevent Georgia’s receiving the European Union membership candidate status by the end of this year.
