Formula TV journalist alleges verbal harassment, unwanted physical contact in metro

Ia Sartania, a journalist at the opposition-lined Formula"TV, recounted an incident on Monday, where she claimed to have been subjected to verbal insults and unwanted physical contact by a man in the Tbilisi metro. According to Sartania, the man's attention was drawn to her tattoos, leading to a series of uncomfortable interactions.

"He placed his hand on my shoulder, tightened his grip, pulled me towards him, touched my hand, and then began hurling insults," Sartania recounted. "His words were offensive, targeting my tattoos, and I hesitate to repeat them. Subsequently, when the train stopped, I alerted the driver and contacted the authorities. Law enforcement responded promptly, removing the individual from the scene," she stated during a broadcast on Formula.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that an administrative investigation has been initiated, with reports indicating that the individual in question has been brought before the courts.

Sartania expressed disappointment at the lack of intervention from fellow passengers. "No one came to my aid. It was evident that the man was targeting me. Upon disembarking, an elderly gentleman attempted to intercede, but we proceeded to file reports and pursue legal action," she remarked.

Although the assailant did not make a mention of her profession, Sartania noted that she was carrying a bag branded with the logo of Formula television company. "I made it clear that I am associated with Formula," she added.

Sartania further underscored her account by sharing a photo of the branded bag on her personal Facebook page.

The Special Investigation Service clarified that they did not have jurisdiction over the matter, as it did not pertain to the journalist's professional activities.

In response to the incident, the Office of the Public Defender has initiated an investigation, following communication with the journalist.
