Batu Kutelia: sanctions are not merely punitive measures

Sanctions are not merely punitive measures; the purpose of this act is not to punish, but to develop a comprehensive strategy for the US-Georgia partnership, according to international politics expert Batu Kutelia.

Kutelia emphasized the alleged goal of the US was to ensure that the Georgian Dream ruling party remained committed to democratic principles.

"The legislative act, initiated in both chambers of the American legislature, aims to establish that a key aspect of the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States is to prevent Georgia from straying from democracy under the rule of the 'Georgian Dream'. It holds accountable those responsible for such deviations and applies leverage, including sanctions. However, sanctions are not solely punitive; the primary objective of this act is to craft a broader strategy for the US-Georgia partnership, which seeks to support Georgia in terms of economic development and security," said Kutelia. The United States Department of State announced on Thursday the implementation of a new visa restriction policy targeting individuals in Georgia who are deemed responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy, along with their family members. This move accompanies a “comprehensive review” of bilateral ties, triggered by controversies surrounding a new foreign agents law.

Earlier a bill was initiated in the US which included visa and economic benefits for Georgia if the latter maintained its foreign policy goals and sanctions if derailed from the Euro-Atlantic path.
