Georgia’s UNM opposition to decide on leadership at upcoming party congress

Tina Bokuchava, the Char of the United National Movement opposition party, on Thursday announced the UNM would hold a congress on July 8, where key leadership decisions would be made.

The congress will feature a presentation and discussions about the roles of the party chairman and the head of the political council, she told the press.

Bokuchava said, "you know that the political council is the main decision-making body of the UNM. This is a deliberative entity, and it is crucial for intra-party democracy that all decisions are considered within the political council's framework."

She added, “We are planning a significant event on July 8. It will serve as both a presentation and a part of the congress, where decisions regarding the chairman of the party and the head of the political council will be made. Additionally, there will be other announcements that the public will hear soon. Today, we are gathered to make these decisions."

Bokuchava mentioned that Levan Khabeishvili, the former UNM chair quitting the post in June due to alleged health issues, had proposed leading the party’s political council. "I will be responsible for leading the party into the elections under my chairmanship," Bokuchava said.

Regarding opposition unity, Bokuchava highlighted the Brussels declaration, signed by the UNM and five other opposition parties, emphasizing the importance of a unified opposition front in the upcoming October general elections. "We believe it is crucial to have a common opposition front during this crucial moment, and we are ready to make every effort to achieve unity in the coming days," she noted. When asked about the National Movement's offer to other opposition parties, Bokuchava responded, "we offer everything that will unite us. It is essential to create a common front against the regime, which our international partners refer to as a Russian hybrid operation against the Georgian people and Georgia's European choice. We must respond adequately to this situation."

Bokuchava concluded, "the red line for me and for all pro-Western parties should be the defeat of Bidzina Ivanishvili's [the founder of the Georgian Dream ruling party and its current honorary chair] regime."
