Twenty-seven percent of Georgia’s adult population over 16, 962,165 individuals, have received their one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 10 per cent, 286,187 people, have been fully vaccinated as of August 22.

Georgian health officials say that the epidemiological situation remains ‘alarming’ in Georgia with almost 60,000 active cases and daily infections hitting 4,000-5,000.

Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze says that vaccination of at least 30 per cent of the country’s 3.7 million population is necessary by the end of September to curb the spread of the virus.

He stated that more than 40 percent of the school personnel and more than 60 percent of health workers have got the coronavirus jab so far.

Gamkrelidze says that NCDC will not recommend the opening of the schools where at least 80 percent of the personnel will not be vaccinated.

Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines are currently available in Georgia and the citizens of Georgia and a certain category of foregn nationals living in the country are able to receive them free of charge.

Vaccination in Georgia began in March 2021.
