Elon Musk has announced his departure from the Trump administration, stepping down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, a position he held as a special government employee.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Musk thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to lead the department, commonly referred to by its acronym, DOGE.
“As my time as a special government employee is coming to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for giving me the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “DOGE’s mission will only grow stronger over time as it becomes a way of life for the entire government.”
The White House confirmed the resignation, with an official stating that Musk’s departure is effective immediately. No successor has yet been named.
Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, had been at the forefront of a controversial campaign to streamline federal operations, a drive that resulted in the elimination of thousands of government jobs.
The Department of Government Efficiency was established under President Trump’s second term with the stated aim of reducing bureaucracy and curbing federal expenditure. While critics questioned both the scope and legality of some of its initiatives, supporters argued it brought much-needed reform to sprawling government agencies.
