For the first time in history, Georgia’s women’s rugby sevens team competed in the Rugby Europe Championship this year.
Held in two stages across Croatia and Germany, the tournament saw the Georgian team earn its debut victory against Italy. While the team was unable to retain its place in Europe’s 12-team elite division, it sparked hope that Georgian women will soon emerge as a force to be reckoned with in European rugby.
Upon returning from the tournament, head coach of the women’s sevens team, Jaba Malaghuradze, reflected on their experience:
“Regardless of the final result, our participation in the Rugby Europe Championship is not just a fact—it is a historic milestone. And for that reason alone, I already consider it a major achievement.
The tournament was extremely challenging. We competed among the top 12 teams in Europe and secured a victory over Italy—another historic moment for us.
Our goal was to stay in the division and secure our spot. However, I believe success shouldn’t be measured solely by whether we remained in the division or not. I think we met many important benchmarks.
We understand this is not the finish line—it’s part of the journey that women’s rugby in Georgia is taking. This tournament, and this year as a whole, are just steps toward achieving even greater success.
We know with certainty that tomorrow we’ll be stronger, because we have the desire and the goal not to fall short of those who are stronger than us today. The most important thing is to believe,” said Jaba Malaghuradze.
For the past 10 years, TBC has been a proud partner and supporter of Georgian rugby. The story of these young Georgian women is truly inspiring and motivational—they’ve proven time and again that with belief, every obstacle can be overcome. That courage leads us in the right direction.
