The second phase of a trial of a new COVID19 medication produced by Israel showed that 29 out of 30 moderately and severely ill patients recovered within a few days.

93% of the 90 critically ill patients in several Greek hospitals were feeling better within 5 days after using a new medication developed by the team at the Sorask Medical Center in Tel Aviv.
The second phase of the trial confirmed the results of the first phase, which was conducted in Israel the previous winter, and 29 of the 30 moderately or severely ill patients were able to recover within a few days.

“The main purpose of this study was to confirm the safety of the drug. To this date, no significant adverse events have been reported in any of the patients in either group” – said Professor Nadir Arber.

The study was conducted in Athens because Israel did not have enough relevant patients. The position of Chief Inspector was held by the Commissioner of the Greek Corona Virus – Professor Sotiris Tsiodras.

Arber and his team developed a molecule-based drug that the professor studied for 25 years, called CD24, which is found naturally in the body.

“It should be noted that 19 out of 20 patients with Covid-19 do not require any type of therapy. Within 5 to 12 days, approximately 5% of patients begin to deteriorate” -Arber said.

The main cause of clinical deterioration is an overactive immune system, also known as a cytokine storm. In the case of Covid-19 patients, the system begins to attack healthy lung cells.

“This is exactly the problem that our medicine will eliminate” – Arber mentioned.

CD24 is a small protein that attaches to the cell membrane and it performs many functions, including regulating the mechanism responsible for the cytokine storm.

Arber stressed that their treatment, EXO-CD24, does not affect the immune system, but is aimed only at correcting this exact problem, which helps to find the right balance.

“This is accurate medicine. We are very happy that we have found a way to overcome the physiology of the disease. For example, steroids shut down the entire immune system. We balance the part responsible for cytokine storms by using the body’s endogenous mechanism, which means that the body itself offers us the tool” – Arber explained.

Our team is ready to start the final phase of the test.

“No matter how reliable the first stages of the study are, no one can be sure until we compare the results with patients with a placebo effect” – he said.

About 155 patients will participate in the third phase of the study, two-thirds of whom will receive medication and one-third will receive placebo.

The study will be conducted in Israel, but may also be conducted in other countries if the number of patients is not sufficient.

“We hope, we are able to complete the study by the end of the year” – Arber said.

If the results are confirmed, he promised that treatment would be possible relatively quickly and at a low cost.

“In addition, success can open the door to many other diseases” -Arber said.
