A Ukrainian citizen identified as V.K., born in 1992, has been detained at the Sarpi border checkpoint in Georgia on charges of illegal possession and importation of a large quantity of narcotic drugs.

The arrest was the result of a joint operation by the Khelvachauri District Division of the Adjara Police Department and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service, Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Thursday.

Law enforcement officers discovered a significant quantity of the narcotic drug methadone during a personal search of the suspect at the border checkpoint. V.K. was immediately taken into custody and is now facing charges under Articles 260 and 262 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which cover the illegal purchase, storage, and importation of narcotic substances.

If convicted, V.K. could face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison or even life imprisonment, depending on the court’s decision.
