The Chairman of the Government of Georgia's Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Sulkhan Tamazashvili, has paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
Commemorative ceremonies were held in Batumi and Kobuleti on Friday, where Tamazashvili laid flowers at memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers. Family members of the deceased, along with representatives from the Adjara government, the Supreme Council, and local municipalities, also took part in the remembrance events.
Speaking at the memorial, Tamazashvili emphasized the importance of a consistent and principled approach in the country’s efforts to achieve de-occupation. He said that the Georgian state remains committed to preventing future tragedies and to restoring national unity through peaceful means.
The ceremonies marked 17 years since the outbreak of the five-day conflict in August 2008, during which hundreds of soldiers and civilians were killed and tens of thousands displaced from their homes.
