The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has said there were “high expectations” for Georgia to fully implement its human rights commitments under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Speaking in Copenhagen ahead of the European Political Community summit, Berset highlighted that as a member of the Council of Europe, Georgia had taken on “the decision to adopt and implement the European Convention on Human Rights.”

“This is a major commitment, and we have high expectations,” he said. “It means respecting all judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, maintaining constant contact, working together and making progress.”

Berset also confirmed that he would hold discussions with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during the summit, underlining the importance of ongoing dialogue between the Council of Europe and its member states.
