Unfortunately, Georgia ranks first in Europe for road accident injuries and fatalities. At the same time, we maintain the strictest policies regarding alcohol and drug use while driving. The recent changes in the law continue this approach,” said Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs.
He added that the new measures “eliminate any leniency” for drivers caught under the influence. Drivers can no longer have their licenses reinstated after a set period, such as three months, and those benefiting from the amnesty remain responsible for administrative penalties, including fines. Repeat offenses within a year will be treated more severely.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze noted that over 30,000 people will have their driving privileges reinstated under the amnesty.
