Georgia remains unwavering in its commitment to a strategic partnership and cooperative ties with the United States, emphasised Davit Zalkaliani, Georgia’s Ambassador to the United States and former Foreign Minister, on Thursday.

Following a meeting between Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and US Under Secretary of State John Bass, Zalkaliani expressed optimism about future relations and efforts to resolve ongoing issues.

“I am optimistic following today’s meeting. It is crucial for these dialogues to continue,” Zalkaliani remarked. “Despite current challenges, ongoing communications are vital. As Georgia’s ambassador, I maintain regular contact with our strategic partners. The newly appointed US ambassador to Georgia is also actively engaged. Her efforts are exceptionally positive and constructive. Both of us are dedicated to overcoming current challenges. Our longstanding cooperation and relations since independence deserve better than the current situation. We aim to return to and strengthen this partnership.”

The diplomat highlighted that all key areas of bilateral relations were discussed during the meeting, focusing on navigating current circumstances.

“It was a timely and productive meeting,” Zalkaliani added. “There was acknowledgment of the current state of affairs between our strategic partners. We engaged in a detailed discussion on necessary steps forward. Georgia reaffirmed its hope and commitment to its strategic partnership and cooperation with America, aiming to overcome present difficulties.”

Zalkaliani also underscored Georgia’s “consistent commitment” to democratic reforms, noting that the upcoming October 26 elections would adhere to international principles and standards.

“John Bass discussed the ongoing democratic processes in the context of the upcoming elections,” Zalkaliani explained. “The Georgian government has consistently demonstrated its dedication to democratic reforms. Building on past elections, we are confident that the October 26 elections will meet international standards. We also addressed the challenging geopolitical environment in the region.

Georgia remains America’s principal ally in the region, as evidenced by our actions and cooperation with our strategic partner. Given today’s complex geopolitical situation, harmonious and closely coordinated cooperation between our countries is in our mutual interest.”

The meeting between Darchiashvili and Bass on the sidelines of the NATO Washington Summit took place amidst tensions following Tbilisi’s enactment of a controversial law on transparency of foreign influence.
