Amnesty International has called on the Georgian government to respect the work of Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria.

“Attacks against the Georgian ombudsperson doing their human rights work are unacceptable. The Government should respect and not undermine the work of human rights institutions and implement their recommendations to prioritize protection of human life and health,” Amnesty International says.

The rulong Georgian Dream officials have several times accused Lomjaria of being biased to imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

Ruling party head Irakli Kobakhidze said yesterday that a medical panel invited by Lomjaria to assess Saakashvili’s health has made a ‘fake conclusion,’ in which the doctors said that Saakashvili required an immediate transfer to a civil hospital.
Saakashvili has been on hunger strike since his arrest in Tbilisi on October 1.

The Georgian Dream officials believe that Saakashvili is ‘staging a show’ with his hunger strike and that if the former president and his supporters cause unrest at a civil hospital, if Saakashvili is brought there per Lomjaria’s recommendations, she will be held accountable for this.
