Azerbaijani journalist Afqan Sadigov begins hunger strike in Georgian prison

Afqan Sadigov, an Azerbaijani journalist detained in Georgia, has initiated a hunger strike in protest of his imprisonment, declaring he will continue until “justice is restored.” Speaking to Formula TV, his wife shared details of their recent meeting in the pre-trial detention center on September 20.

Sadigov claims that the Georgian authorities, including the judiciary and immigration services, have refused to investigate his case, indicating that they are acting on political orders from the Azerbaijani government.

“This situation shows that both governments are violating the law. They have taken away my husband’s freedom, and my family is living under threats and intimidation. My children are even unable to receive an education. How can one fight in a country where the laws do not work?” she stated.

The journalist was arrested in Tbilisi on August 3 and was placed in three-month extradition detention the following day. The city court’s ruling was upheld by the appellate court. Additionally, the migration department denied Sadigov’s request for political asylum in Georgia, further complicating his situation.
