Georgia honored the memory of National Hero Guram Gabeskiria on what would have been his 79th birthday.
In a ceremony at the Digomi Brothers Cemetery, the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Giorgi Jinjharadze, together with members of the Abkhazian government and deputies of the Supreme Council, laid flowers at Gabeskiria’s grave and paid tribute to his legacy.
Gabeskiria was killed on September 27, 1993, during the fall of Sokhumi, by Abkhaz separatists alongside representatives of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic government.
In 2017, Gabeskiria’s remains were repatriated from occupied Sokhumi and laid to rest with full military honors at Digomi Brothers Cemetery. On September 27, he was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Georgia.
