Continuous memorial services are being held at the tomb of Georgia’s late Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, with clergy performing prayers and psalms around the clock, the Archimandrite Ioane Mchedlishvili of the Holy Trinity Cathedral has announced.
People are able to visit Sioni Cathedral daily to attend the services, which include prayers and the recitation of psalms.
“Eight days have passed since our Most Holy Father departed from this world and appeared before God. Memorial services are ongoing without interruption. Monks read psalms, and all visitors have the opportunity to approach the tomb, although touching is temporarily restricted until the area is properly arranged. Tomorrow marks the ninth day, coinciding by divine providence with the anniversary of the restoration of autocephaly. There will be a memorial service conducted by the clergy. These days have clearly shown how beloved our Patriarch was by the people and the clergy, which he earned through his humility and love,” Archimandrite Mchedlishvili said.
Ilia II, the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, passed away on 17 March 2026. He was laid to rest at Sioni Cathedral on 22 March. Since then, a steady stream of worshippers has continued to visit the cathedral, with access to the Patriarch’s tomb open daily from 08:00 to 22:00.
