Thousands of Syrians gathered in the streets of Damascus on Sunday, celebrating what they described as the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule. Chanting “Freedom” and waving opposition flags, crowds filled a main square after opposition forces declared the capital had been seized following a rapid military offensive.
The announcement came on state television, where members of the Syrian opposition confirmed Assad’s departure from Damascus. Hadi al-Bahra, leader of the main opposition group abroad, proclaimed, “Damascus is now without Bashar al-Assad.” The president’s current location remains unknown.
Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali addressed the nation shortly after, reassuring citizens of a smooth transition. “The government is ready to ensure continuity and will cooperate with any leadership chosen by the Syrian people,” he said.
The development marks a dramatic shift in a conflict that began in 2011 as peaceful protests against Assad’s rule before escalating into a brutal civil war. Over the past 13 years, the war has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
For many Syrians, the fall of Damascus signifies a long-awaited hope for freedom and the rebuilding of their country. However, analysts caution that the road ahead remains uncertain, with challenges in uniting a fractured nation and addressing the involvement of foreign powers.
Further updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
