Former US President Jimmy Carter, a Georgia peanut farmer turned statesman who sought to restore morality and truth to American politics after the Watergate scandal, passed away Sunday at the age of 100.
The Carter Center announced that the 39th president died peacefully in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
The White House has been informed of Carter’s death, according to a Biden administration official. Preparations for a state funeral are underway, as confirmed by a law enforcement source.
Carter had been receiving home hospice care since February 2023 following a series of brief hospital stays. Despite serving only a single term as president from 1977 to 1981 and facing challenges including economic struggles and international crises, Carter left a lasting mark as a global advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights during his unprecedented 43 years of post-presidential service.
A Democrat, Carter was defeated in his 1980 reelection campaign by Ronald Reagan, but his work after leaving the White House reshaped how former presidents contribute to the world. From eradicating diseases to mediating conflicts, Carter’s dedication earned him widespread respect.
Carter became the oldest living former US president in March 2019, surpassing George H.W. Bush’s record.
