The United States has strongly condemned recent violent attacks on journalists and citizens in Georgia, allegedly orchestrated by the ruling Georgian Dream party.

In a statement, the US Embassy in Tbilisi highlighted its commitment to holding those responsible for the violence accountable, including through sanctions if necessary.

“Ambassador Degnan and her European counterparts visited the team at TV Pirveli today. The journalists have shown immense bravery in keeping the public informed. Moments like these underscore the vital role of a free media in a free society,” the embassy’s statement reads.

The embassy labeled the attacks as “brutal and unjustifiable,” emphasizing that the US will utilize all available tools to ensure accountability for individuals involved in acts of violence and fostering a violent environment.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reiterated America’s readiness to take action, including imposing sanctions, to uphold justice and protect democratic principles in Georgia.
