At least five individuals are still missing after the full inspection of the disaster zone in Georgia’s western resort of Shovi, following the deadly landslide on August 3, killing 28, local officials said on Tuesday.
Twenty-six of 28 bodies recovered have been identified, local authorities said. The law enforcement are investigating negligence causing death and violation of safety and construction rules in the aftermath of the landslide, amid the allegations to the authorities over a delayed and “ineffective” response to the landslide consequences, absence of rescue helicopters and early warning systems.
The authorities claim the appearance of two planes in the disaster zone in three hours after receiving the notification would “change anything”, and that it had used “all resources” to respond to the “unpreventable” landslide.
State agencies have not yet published complete official information about the victims, missing and survivors. Information about the deceased and missing have been based on their relatives.
