Azerbaijan has ‘high hopes’ for the European Union to help the country during the talks to ‘normalise’ relations with neighbouring Armenia, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Aliyev noted Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, was ‘actively involved’ in the negotiation process.

“We have high hopes for the efforts of the European Union, especially President Charles Michel, who is already actively involved in this process. He is already familiar with the process. I think this creates a very promising environment for successful negotiations,” he said.

Aliyev added that Armenia accepting the five principles, proposed by Azerbaijan, to normalise relations, was a ‘turning point’ of the talks.
