Batumelebi editor Mzia Amaghlobeli faces charges of assaulting police officer

Georgian authorities have launched an investigation against Mzia Amaghlobeli, editor-in-chief of the media outlet Batumelebi, under Article 353 Part 1 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to attacks on police officers, penitentiary officers, public officials, or public institutions.

Amaghlobeli was detained twice outside the Batumi Police Headquarters. Initially, she was arrested for putting up a sticker and released two hours later, only to be detained again shortly afterward.

According to her lawyers, while the investigation is ongoing under Article 353, no formal charges have been filed against her yet. The defense team has not been provided with case materials at this stage.

Authorities are expected to formally charge Amaghlobeli within the next 48 hours.
