Moldovan citizen arrested in Georgia’s Batumi on drug trafficking charges

Officers of the Adjara Police Department under Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs have arrested a Moldovan citizen on charges related to drug offences, the Ministry said on Saturday.

The body added the detainee, identified as I.K., born in 1977, is accused of illegally purchasing and storing a particularly large quantity of narcotics, as well as facilitating their distribution.

Law enforcement officers seized 61 packages of the narcotic substance methadone, prepared for sale, during searches of the suspect’s person and temporary residence in the country’s Black Sea resort city of Batumi. The drugs were classified as a particularly large quantity and were taken as evidence.

Police also confiscated materials used for packaging narcotics from the temporary apartment.

The offences are punishable by up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
