Georgian Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze visited the Iashvili Central Children’s Hospital on Sunday to mark International Childhood Cancer Day, observed annually on February 15.
The Ministry’s press office said Sarjveladze met children diagnosed with oncological diseases, spoke with their parents and medical staff, and received detailed information on the patients’ health conditions and treatment progress.
The Minister stated that the Government fully funds treatment for children diagnosed with cancer, both in Georgia and in leading medical institutions abroad, under a special state programme.
The programme for overseas treatment of paediatric oncology patients has been in operation since August 2023. The treatment package covers diagnostics and a full course of therapy, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical intervention and, where necessary, proton therapy.
For beneficiaries under the age of 18, the state finances treatment not only in Georgia but also in high-tech medical centres in Spain, Israel and Turkey.
Since its launch, 195 children have been enrolled in the programme.
