The honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, has congratulated Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II on the 48th anniversary of his enthronement.
In a written statement, Ivanishvili praised the Patriarch’s decades-long leadership of the Georgian Orthodox Church, describing his role as central to national unity, faith, and statehood.
“For 48 years, the spiritual father of Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, has served our Church, our faith, and our homeland with dignity and integrity,” the statement said. “His contribution to strengthening unity among Georgians, Christianity, and statehood is invaluable.”
Ivanishvili noted that despite major political and social upheavals over nearly half a century, Ilia II has continued to carry what he described as the “heavy cross” of spiritual leadership.
On behalf of himself and his wife, Ekaterina Khvedelidze, Ivanishvili wished the Patriarch health and strength, expressing hope that he would continue his service for many years to come in support of Orthodox values.
Ilia II was elected Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia in December 1977 and was enthroned on 25 December of that year.
