The European Union’s High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Joseph Borrell, has highlighted “obvious democratic backsliding” in Georgia, calling the upcoming October 26 elections a decisive moment for the country’s future.

Speaking in Brussels ahead of a European Council meeting where Georgia is on the agenda, Borrell underscored the significance of the vote.

“The next elections will be the moment of truth,” he said. “The Georgian people must decide which way they want to go – towards Europe or away from Europe. This is an important moment for us and even more for the Georgian people, because the future of the country is at stake.”

Borrell’s remarks come as the European Council discusses Georgia’s democratic trajectory amid growing concerns over governance and reforms.
