Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday responded to the claims by Khatuna Samnidze, an opposition MP, that unidentified opposition groups were hampering Georgia’s obtaining the bloc’s candidate status, and claimed “both the ruling party and the opposition” representatives were for the status in meetings with him.
“Everyone I talked to, from the ruling party, from the opposition parties, all supported the granting of candidate status to Georgia”, the diplomat said after the meeting with President Salome Zourabichvili in her office, and added “I had meetings with all interested parties, all parties, civil society, organizations, scientists, no one spoke against granting the status to Georgia”.
He noted on November 8 the European Commision was expected to present its report on Tbilisi’s implementation of the outlined reform agenda for the status, which will be used in mid-December by the European Council to decide on the country’s status.
He noted the President “plans to be active in supporting the granting of the candidate status to Georgia”.
