The Member of the European Parliament, Kathleen Van Brempt, has called for new elections in Georgia to be held “in a free format”, emphasising that “effective” and “comprehensive” international observation must be ensured.

Speaking about the ongoing political situation in Georgia, Van Brempt underlined that only the Georgian people can bring about a change in Government and this must happen through democratic means.

“We are calling for new elections to be held in a free format, which also includes effective and full observation. However, we cannot change the regime in Georgia, this must be done by the people, and for that, democratic elections are necessary,” she stated.

The MEP also praised the persistence and courage of Georgian protesters, who continue to demonstrate despite Government pressure and large fines.

“It is impressive that protests in Georgia are still ongoing. People are being fined - we are talking about significant amounts - yet they continue to take to the streets despite these risks. Some may even end up in prison. They could leave the country, but they choose to stay. This shows the resilience and bravery of the Georgian people,” Van Brempt said.
