EU Commissioner urges GD to de-escalate tensions, expresses solidarity with Georgian people

The European Union has expressed solidarity with the people of Georgia and urged the country’s authorities to take swift action to reduce escalating tensions. Speaking during a plenary session of the European Parliament, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner strongly criticized recent actions by Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream.

“Violence and hate speech against peaceful protesters, politicians, and media representatives, reports of politically motivated dismissals of civil servants, and threats against Salome Zourabichvili are utterly unacceptable,” Brunner stated.

He further highlighted concerns over detained protesters, many of whom remain in custody and face criminal charges, while no charges have been brought against law enforcement officers accused of violence during protest crackdowns. Brunner emphasized that these actions, including serious allegations of torture raised by Georgia’s ombudsman, undermine the country’s aspirations as an EU candidate state.

“These actions are inconsistent with the status of an EU candidate country. The European Union stands in solidarity with the Georgian people and calls on the authorities to act swiftly to de-escalate the situation,” Brunner said.
