Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accepted an invitation from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for a meeting, but under the condition that it takes place in Kyiv this week. Zelenskyy communicated his response via a post on X, stating, “Ok. Come to Kyiv on Friday.”
Fico had earlier expressed a desire to meet on Slovak territory, near the state border, to discuss the cessation of Russian gas transit, indicating he holds a “different opinion” on the potential outcomes of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. Fico emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities and advocated for Slovakia as a venue for peace negotiations.
“In all my foreign trips, I emphasize the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, support existing peace plans, and propose that peace negotiations at any level also take place in Slovakia,” Fico stated.
Fico extended his willingness to continue dialogue with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and suggested using the Kyiv-Kosice train for their discussions near the border.
Tensions have been escalating between the two leaders, particularly over the issue of Russian gas transit. Fico recently threatened strict measures if the transit through Ukraine is not resumed. In retaliation, President Zelenskyy criticized Fico for miscalculating his foreign and energy policies, labeling the Slovak Prime Minister’s expectations for lasting ties with Moscow as a significant mistake. He also pointed out that he had previously offered Slovakia assistance to adjust to the lack of Russian gas transit, which Fico reportedly “arrogantly refused.”
