The Council of  Europe (CoE) expects from Russia that the country will pay 10 million euros in compensation for Georgian victims who were illegally deported from Russia back in 2006 by the end of the year.

The European Court of Human Rights released its judgement against Russia in the case back in 2019.

However, Russia, which occupies 20 percent of the Georgian territory, has not paid the compensation so far.

The Council of Europe Committee of Ministers claims that Georgian and Russian governments have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding to allow the payment of the sum as well as accrued interest through an escrow account of the CoE.

The Georgian government has already signed the memorandum, while Russia has not.
