The US Department of State on Monday said the companies located in Georgian airports may face risks of sanctions due to recently restored Russia-Georgia flights.

“Many Western countries, including the US, have banned Russian aircraft from entering their airspace. We are concerned about the resumption of direct flights between Russia and Georgia. This may mean that companies in Georgian airports may be at risk of sanctions”, spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

He said it was not the “right time” to intensify relations with Russia amid the latter’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

Moscow on May 10 said it resumed direct flights with Georgia the Kremlin canceled in 2019 and also lifted visa restrictions it had maintained since 2000.

The Georgian government said imposing sanctions on Russia would affect the Georgian people and the country’s economy, adding the moves would benefit the Georgian citizens living in Russia.
