US Congressman Joe Wilson, Republican co-chair of the US Helsinki Commission, has strongly condemned a recent open letter from Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze to President Donald Trump, calling the move “obscene” and “disgraceful.”
In a post on X, Wilson accused the Georgian government, under the influence of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, of betraying the pro-Western aspirations of the Georgian people. “The audacity to make demands of President Trump is obscene,” Wilson wrote.
He also added that since the “illegal seizure of the Georgian state in October,” the ruling elite has:
- Spread daily anti-American propaganda
- Accused President Trump of corruption
- Expelled US companies in favor of the Chinese Communist Party
- Pursued ties with the Iranian regime
- Banned opposition parties
- Beaten and imprisoned innocent citizens
Wilson’s remarks come in response to a letter published by PM Kobakhidze on May 13, in which he appealed to Trump to defeat the “deep state” in the US and renew a strategic partnership with Georgia. The Georgian leader accused US-funded organizations such as USAID, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and the Soros Foundation of promoting radicalism, gender and LGBT “propaganda,” and anti-government unrest in Georgia.
Kobakhidze further criticized US sanctions imposed on Georgian officials, claiming they were designed to punish the government for resisting a “revolutionary scenario” allegedly orchestrated by the Biden administration. He also attacked the recently passed MEGOBARI Act, labeling it “hostile” and “Orwellian.”
Despite the sharp rhetoric, Kobakhidze expressed hope for a reset in US-Georgia relations under a potential second Trump administration, stating that Georgia was ready to renew ties “from a clean slate” and based on shared values.
