Construction of 9-km Kvesheti-Kobil tunnel launches in Georgia

The construction of the 9-km long and 15-m in width Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel in mountainous Georgia has started today, which will be the longest tunnel in the country.

 

It will start at Tskere village and end at Kobi village, and will pass under Jvari pass –  a section which is frequently closed during cold seasons due to severe meteorological conditions. 

 

The project aiims  to maintain non-stop  movement in the winter, reduce risks of road accidents and improve safety. 

 

The construction work is funded by Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. 

 

The total cost of the project stands at  1.2 billion GEL and is due to be completed by 2024.
