The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed “shock” over the recent attack on Georgia’s former Prime Minister and leader of For Georgia opposition party Giorgi Gakharia, labeling it a troubling escalation of political violence in the country.

In a statement, the Ministry called on Georgian authorities to take swift action to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of political and civic opposition figures. “Political violence in Georgia has reached yet another level,” the statement read, emphasizing the need for immediate measures to prevent further assaults.

Gakharia was reportedly assaulted by ruling Georgian Dream representatives in a Batumi Sheraton Hotel, western Georgia, this week.
