The Danish Embassy in Georgia on Thursday reacted to summoning of Ambassador  Anne Toft Sørensen in the country’s foreign office following her latest op-ed, in which she made a mention of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, who earlier this month announced his third political comeback to politics.

The GD MPs have slammed the diplomat for labeling Ivanishvili as an “oligarch” who “amassed his fortune in Russia in the 1990s”, in the lead-up of her summoning to the Georgian foreign ministry for explanations.

The embassy noted an excerpt from a Danish article being used out of context in Georgian debates, stating it had no desire to contribute further to this matter and would refrain from additional comments. It stressed the original piece in the Danish newspaper was written in the aftermath of the historic decision to grant Georgia EU candidate status, which it claimed underscored Georgia’s “clear desire” to continue its EU integration, emphasizing the potential contributions Denmark could make to support Georgia.

“This includes areas such as the green transition, peace, stability, and cooperation in various other domains. Denmark has been a consistent supporter of Georgia on its path to Euro-Atlantic integration, providing assistance in implementing reforms, and it remains committed to supporting Georgia’s accession to the EU”, the embassy said.
