David Cameron: Georgian Govt stepped away from Euro-Atlantic aspirations by adopting foreign influence bill

David Cameron, the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has responded to the adoption of the foreign influence law by the ruling party of Georgia in a post published on social network X.

Cameron wrote that by overcoming the president’s veto, the Georgian government deviated from its Euro-Atlantic aspiration path. 

“The Georgian people have been clear: their future is with the Euro-Atlantic community. By overriding the President’s veto to adopt the law on foreign influence, the Georgian Government has stepped away from these aspirations.

The UK stands with the Georgian people”, he said.

Despite strong protests from civil society and international partners, on May 28, the Parliament of Georgia overrode the president’s veto on the bill and passed the legislation.

The law, which mandates that non-governmental and media organizations receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad be classified as organizations serving the interests of a foreign power, is set to be signed by the chairman of the Parliament of Georgia.
