Georgian political analyst Davit Chikhelidze on Monday criticised the newly signed trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, claiming it marked Europe’s “economic surrender” and solidified Washington’s dominance over its transatlantic partner.

In a social media post, Chikhelidze argued that the deal transformed Europe into a “vassal” of the United States, with terms he described as heavily skewed in favour of Washington.

“This agreement reinforces the US’s dominant position and imposes conditions that are advantageous for America but unfair, harmful, and disproportionate for the European Union,” he wrote.

Chikhelidze warned that the agreement obliged the EU to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the US and increase purchases of American energy - a move he said would deepen the bloc’s dependency rather than promote market diversification.

He also pointed out that despite some tariff reductions - including a 15% rate on certain European products - others would remain subject to tariffs as high as 50%.

“Both sides may be celebrating, but only the US has reason to,” he said. “By signing this deal, the EU has essentially approved the dismantling of its own economy.”
