Chairman of the Parliament Procedural Issues Committee, David Matikashvili, on Thursday claimed that no individual was the victim of the October 4 coup attempt, rather, the “real victim” was the country itself.

“On October 4, the attempt to violently overthrow the government failed. Some of the perpetrators have been arrested, and the country survived a very serious process. We saw similar events in the 1990s. Every rational person can confirm that a violent overthrow of the government, or deviation from the Constitution, leads a country into a process from which it may never fully recover. A government installed by violence would implement plans funded from abroad. We prevented all of this through the precise work of the authorities and law enforcement,” Matikashvili said.

Regarding the arrested individuals, he added that their “crocodile tears” were not credible.

“No one is the victim here. The victim is our country, which could have suffered greatly due to the misdeeds of these unpatriotic traitors. We saw explosives brought in, which could have been used on October 4. The real victims are the police officers who required hospitalization. Those who planned the violence can never be considered victims or defenders of the Constitution,” Matikashvili said.

He emphasized that over 1.1 million citizens had chosen democratic development in recent elections, highlighting the contrast between public support for democracy and the actions of those involved in the attempted coup.
