Georgia’s energy regulator has decided to maintain existing electricity tariffs for the next three months, delaying any potential price increase.
The Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission announced on Monday that it would set temporary tariffs, meaning current electricity prices will remain unchanged until the end of the three-month period.
GNERC Chair David Narmania said the decision was taken after considering several factors, including requests from electricity distribution companies to postpone tariff revisions and uncertainties surrounding electricity balance data and generation forecasts for the coming year.
Distribution companies formally asked the regulator to delay the process, citing the lack of fully verified electricity balance figures and unclear projections for future power generation. Consultations were also held with the government ahead of the decision.
Earlier this month, GNERC had warned that electricity tariffs could increase, although Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze later expressed hope that prices would remain stable.
Speaking to journalists before the commission meeting, Narmania said consultations with the prime minister were “a natural process,” noting that electricity balances, generation forecasts and the deregulation of hydropower plants fall under government responsibility.
He rejected suggestions that government statements influenced the regulator’s decision, saying previous remarks referred only to scenarios under which tariff increases might have been necessary.
“At present, those factors do not exist,” Narmania said. “Therefore, existing tariffs are being maintained.”
Narmania also confirmed that no increase in natural gas tariffs was expected, adding that only minor technical adjustments had been under discussion.
