De facto president of Georgia’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region Anatoly Bibilov says that ‘South Ossetians’ are expected to receive Russian citizenship in a simplified manner in the near future.

“The  agreement on dual citizenship with Russia has been signed and ratified with South Ossetia. Currently, the ratification process is underway in the State Duma, and after this, the document will be ratified by the Federation Council after which the simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship will be possible in about a month,” Bibilov stated in his recent Instagram live.

Russian President Vladimir Putin backed an agreement on dual citizenship between the Russian Federation and the de facto Tskhinvali in August 2021.

Russia plans to sign a similar agreement with Georgia’s another breakaway region of Abkhazia.

Around 80-90% of the population in both de facto regions already have dual citizenship.
