The death toll from a Russian ballistic missile strike on an educational institute in Poltava, central Ukraine, has risen to 51, with 219 civilians injured.

The attack occurred on September 3, as classes were underway at the Military Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology.

Students and staff were heading to a bomb shelter after an air-raid alarm was sounded at 09:08 Kyiv time when two missiles struck the area, causing widespread destruction.

Ukrainian officials confirmed the casualties, including First Lady Olena Zelenska and Ministry of Defence spokesman Dmytro Lazutkin.

Rescue operations continue as bodies are recovered from the rubble, making it one of the deadliest single attacks in the ongoing conflict.
