US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan says that every election should show improvements and if the October 2 municipal elections in Georgia are held in a better manner than previous races, it will indicate that the country remains committed to its European development.

She has expressed hope that the elections will be held in line with high standards.

Commenting on an alleged return of Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili to Georgia for the elections, Degnan said that the country needs a calm and a peaceful election environment and not election-related complications or violence.

MEPs Viola von Cramon and Marina Kaljurand have also stated that Saakashvili’s alleged return for the elections may spark tension which is not in the state interests.
