Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on Monday vowed his country’s support for Georgia’s obtaining the European Union membership candidate status by the end of this year, during his official visit in Tbilisi, where the official will open his country’s embassy.
In his press comments following the meeting with Georgian FM Ilia Darchiashvili, the visiting official stressed European integration was a “merit-based, time-consuming” process.
Both Darchiashvili and prime minister Irakli Garibashvili thanked the Danish FM for his country’s support for Georgia’s European aspirations, with the former also saying Tbilisi remained “committed” to the international sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine last year.
Rasmussen arrived in Georgia on Sunday and visited the occupation line in central Georgia the same day, which separates the country’s Russian occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region with the rest of Georgia, with the EU Monitoring Mission hosting him and briefing on illegal occupation actions by Russia in and near the occupied Tskhinvali and Abkhazia regions.
The official also met with Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili and has been scheduled to leave Tbilisi after opening the embassy later on Monday.
