Georgia has welcomed around 30,000 Ukrainians over the past two years, offering them protection, dignity, and a renewed sense of hope, Didier Trebucq, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Georgia, said.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Ukrainian House in Tbilisi on Wednesday, Trebucq highlighted the creation of 19 new businesses established by Ukrainian refugees with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), CARE Caucasus, and funding from the German Government.
“I am very happy to be here today at the Ukrainian House to hand over certificates to 19 new businesses created by Ukrainian refugees in Georgia,” Trebucq said. “This initiative, supported by UNDP and the German government, is vital - not only for the individuals involved but also for the broader community.”
He described the Ukrainian House as a “symbol of solidarity and hope” for those who fled the war in Ukraine and are rebuilding their lives in Georgia.
“The refugees are receiving training, learning the local language, and launching new enterprises. This support has enabled them to create jobs and contribute to both Georgia’s economy and their own resilience,” he added.
Trebucq emphasized that refugees should not be viewed merely in terms of numbers but recognised for the skills and talent they bring to their host countries.
“We want to shine a light on the contribution of the Ukrainian people to Georgia’s economic and social development. This is not only a story of survival - it’s a story of empowerment and partnership,” he said.
