Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said drain grades covered with garbage created problems during the heavy rainfall in the capital city on Tuesday, causing serious problems on the streets.

The Mayor also pointed to the city’s poor drainage system, amid the allegations by the domestic opposition and the part of the public of maintaining the problems over the years and taking “no genuine actions” to respond to the problems caused by global warming.

In his comments, Kaladze also said last night’s rainfall covered the whole of Tbilisi, and the amount of rainfall exceeded that of July 13, 2015, when a flood occurred in the Vere valley, killing 21 people.

“In general, there is a problem with underground communication in the city, and we are the first to say it, and it’s no coincidence that where we carry out rehabilitation work, we try everywhere that the first thing to do is to fix underground communications, sewage networks, water pipes, drainage system”, Kaladze said.
